Three’s a Charm as Wolverines Sweep

After two quick 3-0 wins against Juanita and Sammamish High Schools, Bellevue took on the Eastlake Wolves, the third ranked team in the 4A division, in a grueling battle last Friday night. The stands were once again packed with the band and fans coming out in force to cheer on the Wolverines.

To say the match started slow for the Varsity would be an understatement as the Wolves decimated Bellevue 7-25 in the first set with tough serves and a strong defense that Bellevue just couldn’t get past …. and then the real game started. Bellevue came out in the second set with a fierce determination that has set them apart all season. Even though they trailed for most of the set, they never let up and made play after play to keep within a few points of their opponent. With the team down 11-18 in the second set, it was looking like another tough loss when they slowly starting crawling their way back. Middle hitter Katie Sorrell came up with a clutch block followed by a massive kill and the tides turned. Carly Burns, the Junior libero, made one save after another playing amazing defense and diving all over the back line to keep the ball in play and help pull the team to a 23-23 tie, and then finally pulling ahead to win the set 25-23. They started down again in the third set 12-17 and had to come from behind with great digs and a strong line-up at the net to pull out another win 25-21. With the momentum clearly in our favor, the Wolverines started off strong in the fourth set but couldn’t hold on to the lead and lost 21-25 forcing a fifth set. Bellevue started with an ace by setter Mia Vong, and then followed up with six more points straight with the team closing on great blocks and serious kills at the net for resounding 7-0 lead. The game looked over for Eastlake when a series of errors by Bellevue let them back in to nearly tie the game at 10-9 before Bellevue answered with some more great defense by Carly and strong plays from the middle and outside to finally finish the match 15-12. The win moves Bellevue to #8 in state with a 12-1 overall record and keeps them in first place in the division. The Varsity team went on to beat Interlake on Tuesday night for a four-game sweep.

The C-Team had some great serving and showed a lot of improvement, but lost to Juanita before finding their groove with strong serves and setting up plays to sweep Sammamish in three sets. Hitters Ali Follet and Kiana Amini-Naieni scored at the net to help turn momentum in their favor followed up by great serves by Juanna Haque, Elsa Ulfengren, and Ashley Farringer to close out the match. They couldn’t hold their momentum, though, and lost to Eastlake and Interlake for a 5-9 record overall heading into the final stretch of the season. The JV Team moves into second place in the division as their record improves last week and they pull out a close win last night against Interlake.

The Wolverines’ last home game is this Thursday night where we celebrate our Seniors! The C-Team and JV start at 5:15 and the Varsity starts at 7:00.
