Wolverines Avenge Loss to Rebels

Bellevue Short-handed but Sweeps Juanita 3-0

The Bellevue Wolverines looked to avenge an early season upset loss to Juanita, this time taking them on at their place Wednesday night. The Wolverines were a little short-handed without stand-out hitter Callie Weber and Senior reserve Emily Kowalski.

Alexis Khuu beginning matches with an ace is always a good start for BHS. That led to a 4-2 lead before Holly Huard got the serve. Huard served three straight aces before a Natalie Moselle kill. Huard followed that up with two more aces to vault Bellevue to a 9-2 and a Juanita time out. But, Juanita was able to crawl back to a 12-9 score. Huard had back to back kills and then another kill to stretch the lead to 16-11. Juanita, playing scrappy in the back row, quickly made it 18-18. A back-row kill by Huard made it 19-18 and a side out. Another back-row Huard smash stretched the lead to 22-19. A Moselle kill made it 24-20 before a long serve from JHS ended the first game, 25-21.

Juanita started out with a slim lead before Ally Witham got the kill to make it 2-3. Jenna Keenan then took over the game with three straight kills to bring BHS back into the lead at 6-5. Bellevue went on a little run behind kills from Jordan Meyers, Huard, and Keenan to make it 12-6. Emily Burns served up and ace and then Huard got a couple of more kills to make it 15-9. But Juanita clawed back again to tie it 15-15. A Huard kill was followed by a Naomi Chen-Mallouk kill off of an overpass. A Meyers kill made it 18-15. Another Huard kill from the back row followed yet another Huard kill after a mad scramble to stretch the lead to 20-16. Up 23-21, Juanita got a hard smash that Sophia Knapp dug up, Khuu went to the backset, and Keenan smashed it home from the right side to make it 24-21. BHS then put the game way, 25-21.

Behind Khuu’s serving, BHS jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Knapp got an ace to make it 7-2. Huard and Keenan continued to put away Khuu sets to vault the Wolverines out to a commanding 18-8 lead. Sophomore Hannah Geffe came off the bench to get a couple of kills and BHS had a 20-10 lead. Witham put away a kill from a Liv Sergeeff set to make it 22-13. Bellevue put the game away with a Huard kill, a Knapp ace, and a Huard tip and the final was 25-13.

In JV action, the Wolverines remained undefeated in Kingco with a straight-set victory.  And despite a valiant effort, the C Team lost in three sets to a Juanita team that was fired up by a visit from the football team.  The JV team has clinched the Kingco title for 2016, and the C Team has clinched at least a tie.  They can win league outright with a victory over Redmond on Monday.

Monday is a special night with a varsity battle for the #2 seed in the Kingco tournament, and as we honor our seniors Ally Witham, Emily Burns, and Emily Kowalski. We hope to see you there!
