Bellevue Plays Lights Out at Newport

Wolverines Brave Storm to Sweep Non-League Contest

The Bellevue Wolverines played their 3rd game in 4 nights as they made the three mile, half hour trip to Newport high for a non-league game. The Wolverines were without top hitter, Callie Weber, and key reserve hitters Emily Kowalski and Jordan Meyers. Coach Kalingo tapped into the depth of the program and called up Freshman Julia Bray and Sophomores, Hannah Geffe and Katie Sorrell for this contest.

BHS started out hot with a couple of kills from Holly Huard and a kill from Ally Witham to take an early 3-1 lead. After Jenna Kennan kill, Sophia Knapp took the service line and continued her hot hand with three straight aces to take a 10-3 lead. Naomi Chen-Mallouk got a couple of kills followed by three straight Huard kills to take a commanding 15-6 lead. Natalie Moselle, subbing for Weber, got a couple of kills and the Wolverines ran away with game one, 25-14.

Coach Kalingo shook up the line up in game two but the BHS depth showed up. Down 3-10, Huard started the comeback with three kills. Chen-Mallouk, playing on the outside, showed her hops and slammed a couple down that got the bench jacked up. But, BHS was fighting from behind the whole game. Mena Dedijar got a stuff block followed by and Alexis Khuu ace and Bellevue took a slim 17-16 lead. After Huard’s second straight kill, Witham got the serve tied 21-21. Ally showed them her array of serves and Bellevue took game two, 25-21 behind a couple of her aces.

Senior Ally Witham carried the Wolverines in game three with five kills, with sets from Liv Sergeeff and Taylor Eide, to take a 14-12 lead. Emily Burns served an ace to go up 20-17. Sophomore Hannah Geffe finished off her first varsity action with an ace to take game three and the match, 25-20.

Just 24 hours after the emotionally draining Interlake game and missing three varsity players, the girls showed a lot of resolve by putting away the 4A Newport Knights.

In JV and C action, the teams continued their winning ways with JV taking the match in two sets and C winning in three.
