Wolverines Diggin' Pink Over Interlake

On Wednesday night, Bellevue welcomed Interlake for a volleyball match and our annual dig pink event. This year the event supported Team Survivor Northwest.

The Wolverines started out hot in game one behind an ace from Alexis Khuu, a kill from Katie Sorrell, and back to back Callie Weber kills and BHS was up 4-1. A Weber back row kill got the serve to Sophia Knapp. Knapp got aces on 3 of the four next points and after Naomi Chen-Mallouk and Jenna Keenan combined for a block and Bellevue was on its way up 11-3. After Interlake got things going a bit, Keenan got a kill to go up 15-8. Keenan got 3 aces in a service run and before it was over the Wolverines were up 21-8. Chen-Mallouk, Weber, and Holly Huard all got a kill with assists from Natalie Hayes and Bellevue took game 1, 25-12.

Bellevue raced out to an early lead in game two behind a couple of Weber kills and kills from Chen-Mallouk and Holly Huard. Hannah Geffe aced a serve to put BHS up 9-4. Chen-Mallouk got 2 kills and block in a stretch and after a Huard block, Bellevue was up 18-9 and well on their way. Interlake found another gear and Bellevue couldn’t get the ball to hit the court and the comeback was on. A 19-9 lead was now a 22-22 tie. A Weber kill made it 23-22 and then Mina Dedijer crushed an over pass to make it 24-22 prompting an Interlake timeout. Bellevue couldn’t find the final point and Interlake rode the momentum to run off four points and take game 2, 24-26.

As we know, volleyball is a momentum and Interlake had it. Jumping out to leads of 4-7 and 7-11. Huard kept it close with 3 kills in that stretch but BHS was swimming upstream. Khuu dealt it to Sorrell and then Chen-Mallouk and the Wolverines had closed the gap to 12-13. Huard got a tip kill surrounded by 2 more Knapp aces and the game was knotted at 16. Weber got back to back kills to make in 19-19 . The next point was a long rally with some great saves by both teams but IHS put it out with a hit and Bellevue had it’s first lead since very early at 20-19. Another long rally ended with a Weber kill and Callie did it once again on the next point to make it 22-20. The Saints tied it at 22-22 and the match at 1-1 was very much in the balance. Khuu took a Knapp pass and fed Weber and the tri-captains combined for the point of the game and a 23-22 lead. Chen-Mallouk, well above the net, blocked the Saints hit for a kill and Khuu finished it off with an ace and the critical game three went to BHS, 25-22.

Bellevue had taken the best punch from Interlake and game four quickly got away from them and after Weber’s second ace, Bellevue was ahead 8-1. Khuu was dishing to the middle and both sides and IHS had no answer as Huard, Keenan, and Weber (twice) got kills on consecutive points to stretch the lead to 14-4. The Wolverines had found their stride and Interlake had no answer and it seemed appropriate the tri-captians again combined to put away the game winner, 25-12.

Callie Weber lead the attack with 23 kills followed by Holly Huard and Naomi Chen-Mallouk with 9 each. Alexis Khuu had 43 assists while Sophia Knapp lead the defense with 21 digs. Knapp had 5 aces and Weber and Khuu each dealt 4.

We were able to raise $820 with our dig pink event. Thank you to all those who put in so much work to make it a success. Bellevue travels to Mercer Island on Monday with a chance to tie the Islanders for the league title. Put it on your calendar as it will be a great match.
