Wolverines Bounce Kangs

The Bellevue Wolverine varsity squad put their 2-0 record on the line at home against Lake Washington Monday night.

The Wolverines started out strong in game one with Callie Weber getting 2 kills and an ace to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Jenna Keenan, Naomi Chen-Mallouk, and Holly Huard all added kills but LW was up to the task taking a 7-8 lead. Carly Burns aced a serve to tie it up at 8’s before Weber went on another roll with 3 kills and an ace is a stretch to take a slim 12-11 lead. Huard rotated into the front row to get 3 kills in a stretch to put BHS up 17-13. After consecutive Huard and Weber kills, Burns got a back row hit for a kill to take a 21-16 lead. Weber took command of the rest of the game with 3 kills, including the game winner for a 25-17 game one victory.

Game two began with a Chen-Mallouck ace and started a run from Junior middle Katie Sorrell with three kills in a short stretch to put Bellevue up 7-2. Game two then got sloppy and LW took advantage to get the game to 13-11 before a Bellevue time out. A Weber block and kill put BHS up 18-15 and Sophia Knapp took the serve and rolled off four points to put the Wolverines up 21-16. LW scratched back behind some scrappy play but Keenan tipped home the game winner and BHS took it 25-20.

The Kings hopped out to a quick 1-4 lead before Keenan put home a kill and then an ace to knot it up at 5. Chen-Mallouck and Huard had back to back kills from perfect sets from Alexis Khuu and after a Weber slam BHS was up 10-7. Burns took the serve and aced 3 of the next four points and after a Weber kill the lead was 15-7. Knapp rattled off four service points highlighted with an ace and another Burns back row kill and the 20-10 lead was just enough. LW rallied late but BHS put it away 25-20 and took the match 3-0.

Weber lead the team with 15 kills followed by 8 by Huard and 6 each by Chen-Mallouck and Keenan. Burns had 4 aces and Weber had 3. Khuu had 37 assists and Knapp lead the team with 9 digs.

Bellevue travels down Coal Creek Parkway and visits Liberty on Wednesday and puts their undefeated record on the line.

JV Squad Returns to Action with Exciting Win

After almost a week-long layoff, the JV team got back to work against Lake Washington in the opening match of the day.  Bellevue jumped out to an early lead, and a nice tip by Jessica Buxton gave the Wolverines an 8-5 lead.  The Kangs crept ahead, but Lillian Johnson and Kelly Treves brought the power game with a couple of kills to help Bellevue to an 11-10 lead.  Meghan Weber had a run of a two kills and an ace to extend the lead to 14-12.  Mia Vong successfully jousted a couple of Kangs to take it to 21-18.  Unfortunately, that was the high point for the Wolverines, as the next Kang server went on a long run of well-placed serves and served out to 25-21 Kangaroo victory.

Game two was tight the whole way.  Lauren Gorder had a nice tip play early in the game, and Buxton scored with kills from the net and back row.  Victoria Christopher then followed up with some touch shots at the net and Livie McQuain was a digging machine in the back row.  Vong brought the all-around game with a couple of blocks, strong sets, and an ace.  Weber’s strong kill gave the Wolverines a 21-19 lead.  From there, Christopher and Vong forced the action at the net and the Wolverines prevailed 25-21.

The JV Wolverines came out on fire for the third and deciding game.  Christopher kept up her strong play at the net and Mason Mukhar delivered three points on serve.  McQuain and Claire Seats anchored the defense with some great digs and saves.  Buxton polished off the 15-6 game victory, and overall match win, with a decisive kill.  Nice work, JV team!
