Volleyball Season Opening Win!

The Bellevue Wolverines Varsity volleyball team kicked off their opening season with a 3-0 win against Bainbridge Island. The first set started off slow with some tough serves by both teams and long rallies that kept the score close throughout the match until Senior Julia Bray stepped up to serve with Bellevue leading at 19-18. Two straight aces gave the team a much needed boost and, along with some clutch saves and strong hitting, kept the team on a roll to finish out the set 25-18 with a run of 4 aces in 7 straight serves by Bray. Unfortunately, the team started off the second set struggling to serve receive and, after a series of unforced errors, found themselves down 5-12. Bellevue gets the ball back with some amazing digs and great defense by Seniors Meghan Weber and Carly Burns setting the team up for a kill by Bray. Two more aced serves by Burns and the team is suddenly ahead 20-18. Strong offence and some great defensive plays help the team push back to a 23-23 tie when Senior Jessica Buxton goes to serve in a clutch situation. A quick set and a dominating kill by middle hitter and Sophomore Kaitlyn Watson finishes off the second set with a win at 25-23.

The Wolverines were able to carry their momentum through the start of the third set with two kills in quick succession by Junior Mia Vong, one of two setters for the team. Two more great digs by Webber and a clutch save by Burns sets up another kill and Bellevue is quickly ahead 9-5. An ace by Sophomore setter Izzy Koo and a series of kills from the front line has the team easily winning the third set and match with a final 25-12 victory over the Spartans. Bray led the team from the outside with over 10 kills for the night, followed closely by Weber. Watson rounds out the leading front line in blocks with a strong performance, but it’s the defensive plays made by the entire team that turned the momentum, and ultimately the game, in our favor and sets the team up for a great start to the season!

In JV action, the Wolverines demonstrated the power and depth of their young team in outlasting the Spartans in 3 sets.  The JV/C team fought hard but fell to a talented Bainbridge squad in straight sets.
