Volleyball Program Starts Strong!

Varsity, JV, and JV/C 2-0 in Early Kingco Play

The Bellevue Wolverine volleyball program kicked off its 2019 KingCo campaign with matches against Liberty and Juanita.  Both the Patriots and the Rebels made it to Districts in the 2018 season, so it promised to be a challenging start to the season.

Against Liberty, the varsity match was very tight at the beginning, with both teams trading points until the Wolverines pulled ahead 22-17.  It looked like Bellevue might cruise to victory, but the Liberty defense tightened up and pretty soon the score was locked at 23.  A timely service error from the Patriots and some calm late-game serving from Bellevue helped the Wolverines prevail 26-24.  The next next two sets were a blur, with the Wolverines finding their rhythm and winning by comfortable margins.

The JV team got the season off to a strong start with a straight-set win over Liberty, getting strong contributions from up and down the lineup.  On the JV/C front, the team earned a hard-fought victory against the Patriots. The Wolverines lost the first in a close fought battle with a score of 26-24.  They came back strong with some amazing rallies to a victory in the 2nd (25-18).  In the final, the team had some very strong serves and passing which resulted in a victory of 25-19.

On Wednesday, the Wolverines headed north to Kirkland to take on the Juanita Rebels.  But neither the traffic nor some raucous Rebel fans could unnerve our Wolverines.  Again, the program swept with Varsity, JV, and JV/C Victories.

In the Varsity contest, the Wolverines roared out of the gate behind strong serving, tight defense, and a flurry of kills from the front line.  In particular, the electric sophomore connection of Koo to Watson put the Rebels on their heels.  It all seemed to be working for Bellevue - - great serving from the crafty lefthander Carly Burns, 25 combined digs for Burns and Julia Bray in the back row, and over 30 kills from the front row players Mia Vong, Meghan Weber, Jessica Buxton, Watson, and Bray - - as Bellevue took the match 3-0.

Bellevue’s JV team also dispatched the Rebels in straight sets, improving their overall record to 3-0.  Setters Anastasia Polyakova and Maile Sugamura lead the way with strong serving, solid defense and attacking from the right side.  Defensive Specialist Kaile Liu and Outside Hitter Brooke Huard lead the team in aces.  In JV/C action, the Wolverines struggled to find their groove in the first set with Juanita as they lost 25-15.  However, they came back strong in the 2nd and fought hard for a come-from-behind victory of 25-23.  They came out ready in the 3rd with serving contributions from all.  They also had some great rallies that led to a victory of 25-19.

Overall, a great week for the program with contributions from virtually every player (and many of the parents!).  The standings are up to date, and varsity stats through the second week of the season can be found on the stats tab.
