Wolverines Pretty Dominant in Pink

Varsity, JV, and C Teams Win in Straight Sets over Lake Washington

The Bellevue Wolverine squads hosted the Kangs of Lake Washington in the annual Dig Pink game.  This year, the funds raised are going to a local organization called "NW Hope and Healing" which supports women who are undergoing breast cancer treatment.  The Dig Pink team of Laurie Eide, Julie Huard, Susana Knapp, and Laurie Sergeeff did a fantastic job promoting the evening, selling cookies, t-shirts and raffle tickets, and getting everyone into the spirit of the event.  Overall, the Dig Pink game raised over $1000 for this incredible foundation. Thank you to all who supported this fundraiser!

The Varsity Wolverines were on their game from the very first point.  Callie Weber made it 1-0 with a solid kill to set the tone. The Wolverines stretched the lead to 10-3 behind a Holly Huard slam. BHS was never challenged as they had nearly perfect serve receive from Weber, Sophia Knapp, Ally Witham, and Emily Burns to set up perfect setting from Alexis Khuu and they dispatched the Kangs in game one, 25-12.

Game two started the same as game one with a Weber kill. Weber then took the serve and put away a couple of aces and racked up 4 points. After a Huard kill, Jenna Keenan got the ball to serve. All she did was manage to rattle off 3 straight aces to stretch the lead to 11-2. After a couple of more BHS points, LW called a much needed time out down 13-2. That is when the BHS students, clad in pink, got out the spirit can to get the crowd riled up. The Wolverines didn’t look back and finished off game 2, 25-14, with a Witham slam.

Game three started off with back to back Weber kills, but LW was determined to make this a different contest. Tied 7-7, Naomi Chen-Mallouk had her hardest kill of the season to take the lead. Although LW never took the lead, they kept it close. Bellevue got kills from Natalie Moselle, Emily Kowalski, Mina Dedijer, and Jordan Meyers, from Liv Sergeeff sets, to make it 23-18. Taylor Eide and Meyers served the game away for a final of 25-21.

The JV contest was tight at first, with the scrappy Kangs mounting an inspired defensive effort and jumping to an early lead.  But the Wolverines stuck to their guns, and the hitters took advantage of great sets from Bridget Conroy to find cracks in the LW armor.  Ultimately, the Wolverines pulled away and won the first set 25-21.

Set two was a completely different story, with the Wolverines jumping to a 16-2 lead behind strong serving from Hannah Geffe and aggressive hitting and net play from Meghan Weber. The shell-shocked Kangs never recovered, and Bellevue won 25-6 to secure the match.  The great depth of the JV team was on full display as the Wolverines took the final game 15-11.

The C Team completed the Wolverine sweep with a 25-17, 25-20, and 15-7 victory.  It was a great effort by all, with consistent serving, no rotation violations, and high spirited and committed defensive play with multiple dig attempts. Particularly strong serving and middle hitting by Rachel Nam in the second set.  Lillian Johnson closed out set 3 with 6 service points.

The Wolverines not only looked good in pink, they played great in pink! Bellevue Varsity plays a tournament this Saturday at Monroe high school against some high-powered teams. We hope you can stop by and cheer them on.
